Are those who have reported that the Hannibal directive is real, that Israel is killing its own troops rather than let said troops become prisoners of the enemy, also believe that this is legal? Is it legal. I would be surprised if it is. If it isn't then surely there must be some legal recourse for victims' families. Israel is deemed to be a nation that ascribes to the rule of law.

I think it is hard to say. Particularly because the directive was revoked in 2016 at least officially. It might well be the case that this was simply a criminal breach of protocol but even if that is the case, the protocol had been in place and the resource is still being considered and deployed.

I assume Israel is not the only military operation with a kill switch. Do you know anything about it?

No. I don't know anything about it. One of the arguments made by defence department insiders regarding the veracity of the accusation that the US government was behind the September 11 attack on the world trade centre was that it was illegal. They meant that if President Bush had ordered it he would spend the rest of his life in jail or even be sentenced to death. If it had been some rogue element inside the US department of Defence then they would have been imprisoned or executed.

During WWII the US military used native Americans (Navajo) who could still speak their own language to communicate on the battlefield because the Navajo language could be made into a "code" that could not be broken. The "story" was that each Navajo "code talker" was accompanied by "white" soldier who was tasked with killing the "code talker" rather than let him be captured. I don't know if this "story" is true but is one that many people believed to be true.

Bill Clinton admitted to ordering the assassination of Osama bin Laden.

The recent ruling by the US supreme court regarding presidential immunity for official acts may make it legal for a US president to order the killing of Americans.

If Israeli soldiers know that they cannot surrender (else they killed by their own troops) they might resist engaging in close combat with enemy fighters. This might explain why the IDF resorted to lots of bombing instead of using infantry to fight their way into suspected Hamas strongholds.

Is there any evidence that the Israeli public has protested the Hannibal directive?

In one way or another, the US gov't is behind the 9/11 attacks as they built the terrorist organizations that committed them. We must stop covering and excusing terror, uprise and war promoting countries like the USA, the State of Israel and many others.
