Russian is also Ukrainian Cultural Patrimony
Russian is not reducible to Putin, one would hope.
The question of the moral and political status of Russian in Ukraine reminds me a bit of the way that Jews articulated the meaning of German after the Holocaust. For me, a Jew in Germany the sense has always been that German and its cultural output is also mine and I am not willing to grant the progeny of Hitler the soul of Heine, Felix Mendelssohn, Joseph Roth, Tucholsky or Zweig.
It seems to me that a similar question will emerge in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine as Ukrainians are made to reclaim the works of Ukrainian writers whose body of work was produced in Russian but perhaps just as if not more importantly with the Ukrainian identity of seminal Russian figures such as Gogol or Chekov.
