Friendship as a country

In conversation with Ann Bayouk

In this episode, released on the anniversary of October 7th, I reunite with my friend Angie, a Palestinian with whom I share more than twenty-five years of friendship. We met in Amman, at a time when neither of us imagined our lives would become so deeply intertwined. Between laughter, memories, and countless meals —maftoul, freekeh, babka— we return to what brought us together: curiosity, tenderness, and the conviction that it’s possible to meet each other in the middle of the abyss. We cook, debate, cry, and laugh, and in that everyday ritual we discover that friendship can also be a form of resistance.

Throughout the conversation, we both reflect on the future we want for our children —a future in which they can recognize each other’s pain without losing their own story. As an Argentine Jew, I carry with me the memory of exile and trauma, and hearing her speak of her own in Palestine reminds me that, in the end, we share the same wound. This episode is an invitation to see ourselves reflected in one another —to understand that, despite everything, we continue choosing life, bread, and friendship as an act of faith.
